Lion Head

Antique canes with the king of beasts: The Lion
The lion has been an icon of bravery, strength and royalty for thousands of years Africa, Europe and even Asia. He appeared prominently in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt as a symbol of kings and East Asia (where people had never seen real lions!), they were worshiped as protectors of humans from evil spirits. Not surprisingly officials liked to cane rods lion !
From medieval times, the lion was used in heraldry throughout Europe. Although there are many variations of heraldic lions, there are several important positions in the lion rampant (standing on hind legs), passing (on), stat (standing on all fours), secant (seated) and sleeping (lying). For example, the Royal Arms Scotland has a lion, and the arms of England from lions. These postures influenced somewhat the shape of lions on the canes.
A lion rampant, posture is the most popular, are often found placed at the top of the cane just above the handle. In most cases, the lion holding a shield with lions as heraldic do. The Scriptures are quite small and not stop you grasp the Scriptures while holding the cane. Many lion "real" antique canes you find are made of wood, but a modern reproduction is made with a beautiful pewter Scripture.
Another heraldic posture you can find it sunset. This position creates a T-shaped or L-shaped handle on the shaft of the cane that can be used to support the body weight - which is the difference cane mode other gentlemen. In fact, some of them are made for women, probably for this purpose. As they are manufactured to handle, decoration the handles are small and the grip surfaces are smooth. Again you will find them in wood, ivory, and even scrimshaw.
Other posts Bearings are often not the scripture, but as a form painted button-shaped head cane. In fact, most of them represent coats weapons from various countries.
You can find two types of walking canes lion. One is a lion's head round sitting on top of the cane. The lion often opens mouth as if it was roaring. Some have glass eyes. (Personally, I prefer this type of Cannes Lions. It is easy to carry and still very fashion.) Another type is a lion head at the end of a cane to walk through. A silver or pewter lion head script is inserted at the end the neck twisted. This is probably the most comfortable cane to carry. Since silver and tin are relatively easy to handle, you will find this very finely scripted lion's head cane.
You can also take note of the hand-made African-carved cane with a lion theme. They are really nice and the warmth of fine rare woods that grow on land where the real lions. Although many have a contemporary design (based on old canes Africa) they are compatible in style at one of the ancient lion canes made in Europe or the United States, and worth owning as a fashion accessory a gentleman's agreement.
